Lessons Businesswomen Can Learn From Disney Songs

Hakuna Matata – The Lion King

Hakuna_Matata

Simon and Pumba had the right idea with their classic motto.

We get it. “Stop worrying” is easier said than done. At most, you can distract yourself from worrying, but the best way to handle it is to face the problem head on. Rather than telling yourself to simply stop worrying or distracting yourself from what’s worrying you, ask yourself: Is this something I can solve?

If the answer is YES: Create a list of steps you need to take to move past the issue.

For example, if you’re worried about a decline of productivity in your staff, create a to-do list on ways you can increase productivity.

If the answer is NO: Remember that being a business owner is already stressful enough as it is without worrying about factors you can’t control, such as the state of the economy or a decline in sales in your industry. Instead of worrying, turn these negative external factors as opportunities on how you can make your business stand out.

Remember that worry is more often than not derived from the fear of something that may or may not happen. If it isn’t something you can solve or take preventative action against, accept the uncertainty of what will happen, and tell yourself you’ll cross that bridge when you get to it.

Whistle While You Work – Snow White

Yes, work is work, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. Just as Snow White managed to make house work enjoyable, you can bring that same strategy into the office by encouraging a “Play Hard, Work Hard” attitude. Google, which is known for encouraging fun in the workplace, was rated by Forbes as the number one place to work. This type of company culture not only increases productivity, but also fosters employee loyalty and draws in new talent.

One Jump Ahead – Aladdin

By no means are we condoning stealing food from your local market place, but in a more metaphorical sense, Aladdin had the right idea in staying one jump ahead. There are many different ways to stay ahead of the game. This could mean researching a growing trend in your industry, staying up to date with your competitors, or simply just getting your work done ahead of time rather than putting it off until its due date. Whether it’s staying ahead of the competition or keeping your work team on their toes, there are many benefits to taking a proactive approach. In a competitive stance, it can mean higher profits for your business. In the workplace, it can mean earning the respect of your coworkers, superiors and subordinates. Not bad advice from a street rat.

Learn to Do it – Anastasia

The most successful businesswomen are constantly learning. Sheyrl Sandberg, CEO of Facebook has said that “The ability to learn is the most important quality a leader can have.” Many women shy away from opportunities simply because they don’t feel they have the knowledge or skills to take them on. Having the confidence and initiative to dive into learning something new can open many doors to success. Whether you’re a looking to rise in your field, switch to a different department, or move to a different industry altogether, you can learn to do it.

I Just Can’t Wait to Be King – The Lion King

As a young lion, Simba felt confident and ready to take his place as king. As he grew older, however, and faced the harsh realities of life, he lost that hunger for power and success due to his fear of failure.

In the same way, many women lose the passion and self-confidence they have as children because they are too afraid. In a survey of 4,000 employees at big companies, 36% of men said they want to be CEO, whereas only 18% of women said the same.

By surpassing that fear, and re-igniting that spark you had in your childhood, you can accomplish anything.

Although women have come a long way in achieving equality in the workplace, there is still a long way to go. While I certainly have no delusions that this one blog post will single-handedly bridge the gap between men and women in the business world, I do believe these simple tips can help women, as individuals, to become more successful as workers and leaders. And what better way to remember them than with these catchy songs from our childhood?
